Top 5 shows of the weekend

Follakzoid Austin CQ

It’s hard to get wrapped up in all the terrible news and seemingly everyday atrocities, but it’s important to take note of the good news, the upward trends, the acts of goodwill and all that jazz. I’m not just talking about the actual reality of things getting better over time (despite what it may seem like), but the weekend showlists are getting stronger and the summer announcements are coming thick and fast,  so let’s hear for it some unfashionable optimism.

5) Half Waif, Hovvdy, Lily and Horn Horse at Baby’s All Right
Electronic/orchestral pop act Half Waif are set to release their new record, Lavender, and Baby’s All Right plays host to the record release show this Friday. The band I’m most excited about on this bill is Hovvdy, who released their second album, Cranberry, in February, which is a delicate and at times beautiful lo-fi record with enough pop sensibility to mix things up. Friday 8pm

4) The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Titus Andronicus, Slonk Donkerson at Baby’s All Right
Billed as their “last local performance in a long, long time”, it’s not too surprising that the show sold out, Baby’s is about half the size of a venue you’d expect The Pains of Being Pure at Heart to fill regardless of the suggestion that they might be gone for a while. Of course, be sure not to miss Slonk Donkerson, who haven’t played a show in over a year and have been dearly missed, let’s hope this is the start of some more activity after somewhat of a hiatus. Thursday 8pm

3) The Royal They, Jollys, Great Woods, El Silver Cabs at The Gutter
We’ve mentioned how The Royal They‘s record, Foreign Being is one of our favourites of the year so far, and every time I list a show from The Gutter I mention how it’s one of my favourite places to see a show in the city, so seems like a no-brainer that you should come out to this show for some fun, no-frills 90s-influenced rock and roll. Friday 9pm

2) Steven Wilson at PlayStation Theater
I may long for the days of Porcupine Tree circa 1993-2002 but you can’t often get what you want, and Steven Wilson has still has one of the strongest career discographies of the last 25 years, and he released To the Bone last year, his fifth solo record, which I’m a little lukewarm to overall but it does have some great moments, and the setlist from this tour is definitely worth the price of admission. You have two chances to catch him this weekend, with shows on Saturday and Sunday at Playstation theater. Support comes from Paul Draper who you should recognise from MansunSaturday and Sunday 7pm

1) Follakzoid at Rough Trade
I’ve been somewhat obsessed with Chilean bands for about 6 years, and the best of them all just might be Follakzoid. Perhaps the best preview for one of their live shows, would be my review of their 2015 show at Rough Trade, which was one of the best I have ever seen (their 2013 set at Mercury Lounge with fellow Chilean heavyweights The Holydrug Couple was also incredible). There aren’t many better concert experiences I’ve had than seeing Follakzoid hit a perfect trance-inducing groove. Sunday 8pm
